5 Things you should know about Your Makeup and Acne

Many people believe that makeup causes acne.

For the most part, though, that is inaccurate. Actually, acne is caused or worsened when makeup is used incorrectly. These five tips can help you keep your skin stay acne free, but also lets you wear your makeup.

1. Greasy Creams or Makeup can make Your Acne Worse

Greasy or oil based foundation makeup and other cosmetics can clog your pores, making your acne worse. The tell tale signs of makeup acne is acne that is on the cheeks, usually just under the cheekbone and along the jaw line.

If you use cream or liquid foundation, opt for one that is water based. The lighter the foundation, the better. Apply it with a clean sponge for best results. Dirty or used sponges, or your fingers, can transfer bacteria to your skin.

2. When Your Makeup becomes Spoiled it can Cause Problems for Your Skin

Liquid or cream foundation is good for about six months. However, if your liquid foundation separates or if the powder types of foundation becomes crumbly, it is time to toss it. Store your cosmetics at room temperature in a non humid environment (this means do not keep them in the bathroom).

You should also throw out any makeup that is past its expiration date. If there is no expiration date, then stick with the six month rule.

3. Applying Your Makeup without Cleansing Your Skin first can cause Acne

You should never apply your makeup without first cleansing your skin. When you begin with a clean canvas, your makeup will go on more smoothly and blend much easier. Also, your skin will look healthier.

You do not have to spend a lot of time cleansing your face in the morning. A gentle scrub or even just a gentle cleanser will do fine. Use the pads of your fingers to apply the cleanser to your skin in a circular motion. Rinse well and pat your skin dry with a clean cloth.

4. Sleeping in Your Makeup is very hard on Your Skin

Sleeping in your makeup is a big no-no. No matter how tired you are, you need to take a couple of minutes to remove your makeup. Taking that time before bed to remove your makeup will save you a lot of the time and heartache of fighting acne.

Use a gentle makeup remover or cleanser to remove your makeup. Splash your face with a little water to prepare the makeup for being removed. Apply your cleanser and remove your makeup with warm water then blot dry with a clean towel.

It is also a good idea to use eye makeup remover to remove your mascara and eyeliner, particularly if you use waterproof cosmetics.

5. Mineral Makeup can Help Prevent Acne

The new mineral makeups are awesome! These natural cosmetics can not only make your skin look gorgeous, they can actually prevent acne. It takes a little practice to perfect the application, but it is well worth it. If you skin is not overly prone to acne, you can use the mineral concealer.

However, if the mineral concealer does not cover the way that you want, get an eyeliner brush and use a liquid concealer in a shade that is slightly lighter than your natural skin tone. Use the brush to apply the concealer, one very light layer at a time.
